Ealier last month TRAI had directed all the telecom operators in India to slash roaming charges. Following the TRAI directive, major telecom operators like Airtel, Vodafone, Idea and RCom have slashed roaming call charges by up to 23-40% and roaming SMS charges by up to 75%. This will definitely bring a smile to those who travel frequently out of their home circle and incur heavy roaming bills in the process.
The reduction in roaming charges is applicable from today, i.e. May 1. Last month, TRAI issued new roaming charge ceilings, for a local outgoing call on roaming, a maximum of Rs. 0.80 could be charged, while an inter-circle call in roaming could be charged at a maximum rate of Rs. 1.15 per minute.
As per reports, Airtel has reduced outgoing local SMS charges by upto 75% and inter-circle SMS rates by 74%. It also slashed the outgoing STD roaming calls by 20%, and outgoing local roaming calls by up to 23%. While incoming calls on roaming have been reduced by as much as 40% by the company.
Similarly, Vodafone has also slashed the local SMS while roaming to Rs. 0.25 (earlier it was Rs. 1) and inter-circle SMS while roaming to Rs. 0.38 (earlier it was Rs. 1.50). Outgoing local and STD call rates have also been reduced to Rs. 0.80 and 1.15 from earlier Re.1.00 and Rs. 1.50 respectively.
Reliance Communication has also followed the suit by slashing the local SMS rates while roaming to Rs. 0.25 (earlier it was Rs. 1) and inter-circle SMS rates while roaming to Rs. 0.38 (earlier it was Rs. 1.50). RCom has also drastically reduced the incoming calls while roaming. Now you will be charged 45 paisa per minute of incoming call on roaming, as compared to 75 paisa charged earlier. Outgoing local and STD call rates have also been reduced to Rs. 0.80 and 1.15 from earlier Re.1.00 and Rs. 1.50 respectively.
Idea too will charge incoming calls at 45 paise/minute, while outgoing local calls rates are cheaper by 20% and STD call rates by 23%. Like others, Idea is now charging local SMS @25 paise and STD SMS 38 paise, on roaming nationally.
