Now download and watch Youtube videos offline

Most of us enjoy watching Youtube videos on the go on our smartphones and the only thing that deters us from doing so is steep mobile data cost. What if you were allowed to download your favorite Youtube videos and watch them at your convenience, that too without incurring heavy data bills. Google has finally decided to allow its users to download much of its video inventory on their devices and it will become a reality in coming weeks.

Today at Android One launch event in Gurgaon Google India executive Ceaser Sengupta said “YouTube is popular here. You watch some videos again and again. How awesome would it be if you could keep watching them again and again without having to pay for data, and take the videos with you wherever you go. Within the coming few weeks, much of YouTube will be available offline in India. This is huge, and our users will really, really like this. You can download a video once, save it to your phone, and watch it again and again,”. This goes in tandem with Android Police story where they revealed that Youtube will soon be available in offline mode with subscription based service known as “Youtube Music Key”. Sengupta however didn’t mention about any subscription service or download being limited to just music content.Youtube offline mode

Some of you may not believe it but Youtube search is the second largest search in India after Google search and delivers a huge amount of content among its users. Given the current patchy mobile networks in large parts of India it makes sense for Google to allow users to download and then watch video rather then keep waiting for buffering to get over.

However monetization of these preloaded videos may pose some challenge for Youtube as subscription services most probably can’t bring in the kind of money Youtube may be expecting and delivering offline adverts is a challenge of its own kind. As of now the Youtube offline mode service will be made available in India only and future launch in other countries is still not clear.
