Indian Railways schedules now available on Google Maps public transit

All thanks to new Google Maps update, now we can use its public transit feature to plan our trips with much comfort. This update brings in Indian Railways schedules for almost 12,000 trains in 8 cities across India. That’s not all! Google has announced the addition of public transport schedules for buses and metro as well in these eight cities.

This feature will be of immense help if you frequently travel using public mode of transport or want to pick up friend or a family member from a railway station. These new features under public transit feature has been made available in Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Ahmedabad.Indian Railway on Google TransitThe Google Map’s public transit feature also provides walking directions to bus stops, metro stations and railway stations. At present Google Maps provide public transit support in as many as 2,800 cities across the world including New York, London, Tokyo and Sydney.

In order to use Google Maps Transit feature, simply tap on the get directions icon located in the bottom right corner. Now click on the public transit icon on top and then enter you starting point and destination. Now you will be presented with all the permutation and combinations of public modes of transport available from your point till your destination. You will get the walking directions to your nearest metro stations or bus stop as well.

The Google Transit feature will even give you a rough idea of travel time to your destination, so that you can plan ahead without any worry. In case you want to travel to you destination in least possible time, then you can change the depart or arrive timings to find your perfect travel plan.

“Google Transit is part of our effort to make Google Maps more comprehensive, accurate and useful for millions of people around the world who take buses, trains, metros or trams to their next destination,” Suren Ruhela, director, programme management, Google Maps said.

“We hope that the addition of the Indian Railways schedules pan-India and updated information for eight cities to Google Transit in India will make it a little easier to plan your next trip,” he added.

Google started collaborating with many public transit agencies as early as 2005, to make their schedules available to users via Google Maps. As of now Google Maps transit feature is available free of cost for Android, iOS and Desktop users. Google also provides Hindi support in case you have enabled it via “Language and input” options found in your phone’s settings.
