By | September 18, 2015

Motorola has recently launched newest version of its popular X series, the Moto X Play in an event in New Delhi. The very first Moto X was launched two years ago and was critically acclaimed for its standout features like active display, Motorola assist to name a few. The Moto X 2nd generation launched last year improved on battery and camera departments.

In 2015, Motorola has decided to provide Moto X in two distinct flavors, the Moto X Play and Moto X Style. The Moto X Play falls into the mid-range genre, while the Moto X Style fits well into top notch flagship category.Motorola Moto X Play

Moto X Play is now up for grabs on Flipkart with 16GB version selling for Rs. 18,499($281), while the 32GB storage variant goes for Rs. 19,999($304). So how does the new Moto X Play actually perform in a real world scenario? Lets Find out!

Design and Display

Motorola is known for sturdy devices with top quality hardware, and Moto X Play is no exception. The device comes equipped with a solid build and good looks coupled with traditional design. The nano-SIM+microSD tray placed at the top may look weird to some of you, but we liked this new idea! You will loose network coverage each time to want to pop out the memory card from SIM tray.Moto X play sim tray

The Moto X Play comes with removable back covers and keep in mind to properly fit them in place otherwise water may seep inside the phone. The phone’s internals are coated with water repellent coating making the device water resistant (not water proof!).

The Moto X Play boasts of full-HD 5.5-inch display which translates into a pixel density of 401 ppi. Practically the display looks good and bright enough for day light legibility. The viewing angles are quite good and overall the display delivers the value for money.

Software

The Motorola smartphones have been torch bearers of pure android since last couple of years and Moto X Play is no different. The smartphone comes with bare bones stock android version with few Motorola apps like assist, migrate. The camera software interface is very basic and anyone can operate it without a hitch.Moto Assist app in X play

Moto Assist is one app which can make your life simple and must be talked about. As the name suggests, it is a virtual assistant app which can do some simple tasks. While driving it announces names of callers and also asks if the call should be picked or not.

Camera

The original Moto X and its successor Moto X 2nd Gen. are both fine phones which were let down by mediocre camera performance. But with Moto X Play, Motorola has tried to address camera issue by installing a powerful 21-megapixel rear camera.

Outdoor performance of rear camera in bright day light is quite satisfactory as compared to any other phone in this price range. The low light performance is not up to the mark as auto focus takes some time and even fails sometimes in low light conditions. If one employs tap to focus then results are better but pictures still contain some amount of noise. All in all, the rear camera performance is satisfactory from a mid-range device point of view.

 Performance

Performance wise the Moto X Play is able to live up to the expectations as it performs flawlessly without any lags or whatsoever. The credit goes to octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor coupled with 2GB of RAM. Games like Asphalt 8 were handled elegantly without a hitch.

There was no overheating when we played various games, opened multiple apps simultaneously and even captured some quick video. But just like any other smartphone, it does heat up within reasonable limits while everyday use or charging.

Battery

Moto X Play boasts of a huge 3,630 mAh battery, which as per Motorola’s claim should deliver 30+ hours of mixed usage. Does Moto X Play deliver over 30 hours of mixed usage in real scenario? In our tests Moto X Play easily delivered a full day (12+ hours) of heavy usage. The real usage time may differ between different location based on signal strength, type of network used etc.Moto X Play Battery

Verdict

If you are a stock android fan, who wants a sturdy smartphone with powerful battery at affordable price, coupled with timely software updates and good service then don’t look any further, Moto X Play is the right device for you. We rate this device 9/10.
