It is becoming very difficult to make a mark in Indian tablet market these days with launch of newer, more powerful and more affordable tablet every other day. But Asus is determined to make it’s presence felt with the launch of third iteration of it’s Fonepad 7 tablet series. The most notable feature of this tablet is it’s dual SIM calling functionality which allows you to choose between different service providers and avail the best calling and data plans. Some of the other notable dual SIM calling tablets are HP Voice Tab Series, HCL ME Y3, Karbonn A-34 to name a few. So finally the dual SIM phenomenon has taken over the tablet segment as well and manufacturers like Asus know it very well and are therefore catering to customer demands.
Fonepad 7 dual SIM tablet does not have much of difference with respect to it’s predecessor single SIM Fonepad 7 barring the extra SIM slot and speaker location etc. That being said addition of second SIM can be a game changer for Asus especially in a developing markets like India where dual SIM devices are a preferred choice. Apart from this there are not many takers for WiFi or only data enabled tablets in India. Now let us explore the key specifications and features that this device has on offer for us.
Display: Similar to it’s simgle SIM sibling Fonepad 7 dual SIM sports a 7 inch 1280X800 IPS HD display which is not covered by any kind of protective covering like Gorilla Glass. This display is surrounded by a very thick bezels all around which is not at all pleasing to look at. Display however is good looking and reproduce darker colors at the same time viewing angles are wide.
Operating System: The OS of choice for most of the tablet makers these days is obviously Android. This one from Asus has Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out of the box running it and that is tastefully garnished with Asus UI for increased multitasking capabilities. We can expect it to be upgraded with Android 4.4 Kitkat soon.
CPU: Now here is the real deal we all want to know about. It is powered by a dual core Intel Atom Z2520 System on Chip which clocked at 1.2 Ghz. This CPU is based on Intel CloverTrail plus platform, We get 1 GB of RAM and at the same time 8 GB of on board memory which can be expanded upto 64 GB using microSD card. We ran AnTuTu Bechmark test and the Fonepad 7 scored a respactable 13,500 for a dual SIM device. Asus is also offering 16 GB of storage on it’s webstorage cloud space for one year.
Design: Fonepad 7 dual SIM mimics everything from it’s predecessor except for the speakers have been placed at the back side. Whole body has been made out with plastic and you can’t expect some premium materials from a budget device. Never the less it’s volume rocker and power button give a very good tactile response. Left side of the tablet houses 3 slots (2 SIM slots and one for microSD card).
Others: It has a 5 MP rear camera and a 1.2 MP front facing camera. Camera interface is quite simple and easy to understand. For connectivity it includes Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, EDGE, GPS/AGPS, GLONASS, Micro-USB and 3G (HSPA+). It boasts of an impressive 3,910 mAh battery which can deliver upto 10 hours of mixed usage. It will be available in Grey and White colour variants. The tablet measures 199.5 x 120.8 x 11.35mm and weighs 340 grams.
